50-Word Stories

(Week 2)

  1. It was a pretty mundane day on the farm. Fortunately something exciting happened to brighten up the day. A herd of white stallions escaped from their pen and started galloping up the hill. Their manes flew in the wind and as the sunlight caught the strands, they glistened like diamonds.
  2. He watched the spirals of smoke. There was a certain power in being able to create them.  He narrowed his eyes against the light as he took another long drag from his cigarette. He dropped it, stomped it into the ground and walked out of the alleyway. Time for work.
  3. “Turn, Kick, Fan and Land”, Bethany practiced her routine over and over until she was satisfied. She walked over to the mirror, to see her hair tangled in locks and her sweat trickling from her brow. She smiled to herself and turned away.  She sashayed across the room and left.
  4. As the wind blew in the air, the leaves were caught and flew around Katrina, as she stood on the cliff looking down the waves crashing into the jagged rocks at the bottom. Katrina thought of herself and the child that as yet to be born within her and jumped.
  5. He plucked a string and the note radiated through the air. He breathed in the inspiration. A finger on the fret, he plucked another string. Composition was his life. Note after note, hauntingly beautiful, he played out his life story to the girl he loved the most in the word.

Reflection

It was challenge indeed to come out with stories that would fit into the 50 word count, however, the challenge pushed me to do so. The process was indeed fun. Could you ever imagine a telling a story with few words. I never did, but indeed it was possible. A great story doesn’t need to be of a great length. You can have a 200 word story and yet it is boring and you can have a 50 word story and yet it keeps you captivated. It doesn’t matter where a story comes out from, but it matters if it comes from the heart and mind. I believe a good story is determined by it’s value.

One Response to 50-Word Stories

  1. Ms Phuah

Good job with a variety of stories as well for keeping within the 50 word limit. I like 1 and 2.

BTW, kindly remember to post your weekly notes on the home page.
